Today, the Tech Transparency Project, released the results of a month-long project tracking Big Tech’s sponsorships of newsletters targeted to Beltway insiders. TTP found that Facebook, currently amid a public-relations push promoting Section 230 reform, among other things, sponsored at least one major Beltway newsletter every weekday from the start of February through the first week of March.
Facebook is allowing a far-right, pro-Trump “Patriot Party” movement to take root on its platform, combining elements of militia activity and election conspiracy theories. While the effort so far appears to be largely decentralized, it is spreading rapidly on Facebook. Some of these groups helped organize “Stop the Steal” rallies in Washington, D.C., including the Jan. 6 event that led to the deadly Capitol riot, and are continuing to use the platform to organize.
Today, Campaign for Accountability released a report revealing that Apple and Google continue to offer nearly 20 podcasts that promote far-right militia groups and the baseless QAnon conspiracy theory, despite the role these movements played in fueling the deadly U.S. Capitol riot.
